Security has been significantly intensified in Colombo, Weligama, and Ella following a warning from the US Embassy about a potential terror threat in Arugam Bay. The elite Special Task Force (STF) is leading the security operations, with intelligence officers deployed across key areas.
The STF has been active in Arugam Bay since the initial alert was issued weeks ago, and precautionary measures are now in place in other popular regions to ensure the safety of both tourists and locals.
Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed the arrest of three Sri Lankans in connection with the threats, emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidentiality during ongoing investigations.
Additional police presence has been established outside Jewish prayer houses, known as "Chabad Houses," to protect the Israeli community. In Weligama, roadblocks have been set up around businesses owned by Israeli nationals, causing local concern over visa compliance.
Following the alert from Israel's national security council, at least 22 Israeli nationals departed Sri Lanka yesterday, responding to the warnings about potential attacks. Security measures will remain in effect until further notice as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
