EC Announces Special Voting Leave for Employees

November 03, 2024

The Election Commission has introduced special leave provisions for both public and private sector employees to ensure they can vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections without impacting their salaries or requiring personal leave.

Public sector employees are entitled to a minimum of four hours of leave, as specified in the Establishments Code, with no salary deductions for this time. Meanwhile, similar arrangements have been made for private sector workers in collaboration with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL).

Leave provisions for private sector employees are determined by the distance from their workplace to the polling station:
- 40 kilometers or less: half-day leave
- 40–100 kilometers: one day
- 100–150 kilometers: one and a half days
- Over 150 kilometers: two days

Employees are required to submit written leave requests to their employers, who must maintain a record of all requests and granted leave periods at the workplace.
