The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the date set for the 2024 General Election, scheduled for 14 November. The fundamental rights petition, which questioned the legality of the proposed election date, was heard today by a five-member Supreme Court bench.
The petition was filed by H.M. Priyantha Herath, Secretary of the Api Sri Lanka National Organization and a civil activist, on 21 October. Herath argued that the decision to announce nominations and set the general election date violated provisions within Sri Lanka’s Elections Act. He requested a ruling declaring the decision unconstitutional.
After consideration, the Supreme Court ruled against the petition, allowing the election to proceed as scheduled.
