The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has reported that over 3,000 driving licenses have been temporarily suspended this year due to court orders. As of November 2024, a total of 3,249 licenses have been revoked as a result of traffic violation trials.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasingha, confirmed the suspensions, highlighting that these actions were taken following legal proceedings for various traffic-related offenses.
Meanwhile, Professor Mohamed Mahees, a sociologist at the University of Colombo, attributed the rise in road accidents to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and deficiencies in the country’s road infrastructure. He pointed out the importance of vehicle checks before driving to prevent accidents.
