The National People's Power (NPP) is confident of securing a majority in Thursday's Parliamentary Election and is prepared to form a national unity government, specifically inviting MPs representing the Tamil and Muslim communities, Minister Vijitha Herath said yesterday.
He expressed confidence that the NPP would secure the most seats in the new Parliament. However, to foster national unity, he said that the party would seek cooperation from Tamil and Muslim MPs, excluding those from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and United National Party (UNP).
“We are committed to achieving true national unity, which is why we are open to discussions with MPs from these communities,” he said. "While we believe the NPP can govern successfully on its own, this move would strengthen the political environment in Sri Lanka."
NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has also expressed optimism, predicting that the party will win a two-thirds majority in the election, signaling a strong, unified government.
However, the opposition SJB counters that NPP's popularity has waned since the Presidential Election, claiming a surge in support for their party. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, meanwhile, has urged the election of experienced leaders to address the country's ongoing economic crisis.
Campaigning will end at midnight tonight, with a two-day silent period declared by the Elections Commission. The new Parliament is set to convene on November 21.
