Ministry Accuses Mill Owners of Creating Artificial Rice Shortage

November 11, 2024

The Ministry of Trade has accused rice mill owners of artificially inflating the shortage of 'Nadu' rice in the local market, in a bid to drive up prices. The Ministry’s statement follows a report by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), which confirmed that there are sufficient rice stocks within the country.

M.M., Secretary to the Ministry of Trade, assured the public that immediate measures would be taken to address the issue. This follows reports of rising rice prices and a significant shortage of certain rice varieties, with the sale of rice reportedly dropping by 50%, according to the Maradagahamula Rice Traders' Association.

Prices for rice have recently surpassed the government-controlled rate, especially for Nadu rice. In response, President convened a meeting with major rice producers on October 24, directing them to adhere to control prices. Following this, the Consumer Affairs Authority submitted a report on the national stock levels on November 6.
