The Election Commission, along with the Wellawatte Police, seized goods that were reportedly brought in for distribution to the public, shortly after the election's silent period was declared at midnight (11), by the United Democratic Voice (UDV) party, led by former MP Ranjan Ramanayake.
These items were seized at Hotel Sapphire in Wellawatte, which was operating as the office of the UDV.
Officers from the Election Commission, along with the Wellawatte Police, confiscated a stock of goods that included rice, canned fish, t-shirts, matchboxes, milk powder packets, notebooks, plastic containers, mugs and power banks, all of which were intended for distribution.
Colombo District Deputy Election Commissioner Ravindra Subhashana Wedage, who participated in the raid, stated that this action violated anti-corruption laws. The raid was carried out following a tip-off.
The Wellawatte Police are continuing with further legal actions.
