The National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF) has issued an urgent warning regarding the rising number of Sri Lankans being trafficked into cyber scam centers in Myanmar. The task force revealed that Sri Lankan nationals, particularly those residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), are being recruited and sent in groups to these illegal operations.
According to recent reports, traffickers are targeting IT professionals with promises of lucrative job opportunities abroad. These individuals are initially lured by the prospect of high-paying IT positions, but investigations have uncovered a disturbing trend. Many are enticed to travel to places like Dubai for supposed job interviews, only to find themselves coerced into working in cyber scam centers in Myanmar.
The task force’s findings indicate that victims are subjected to inhumane conditions, including mental and physical torture, with some even reporting brutal acts like electrocution. The NAHTTF strongly advises against using illegal migration routes, emphasizing that such actions violate the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Act and place individuals in significant danger.
In light of these developments, the NAHTTF has called on the public to pursue safe, legal migration options and avoid traveling on visit visas. The task force also urges the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious trafficking activities, particularly in relation to Sri Lankan workers abroad who may be at risk.
For those who suspect trafficking activities, the NAHTTF has provided contact details for confidential reporting:
- Phone: 011 210 2570 / 076 844 7700
- Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The NAHTTF reassures the public that all reports will be handled with the utmost confidentiality, stressing that collective vigilance can help dismantle these dangerous trafficking networks and protect vulnerable individuals.
