The Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court has clarified the nature of the excavation work carried out in the Veyangoda - Wanduramba, stating that the Police Special Task Force (STF) was only ordered to investigate metallic materials underground, not to carry out excavations for a treasure. Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne made this statement in open court today (26).
The Magistrate made this remark when the Police reported that they didn’t find a treasure from the excavated area.
The excavation work was sparked by rumors of treasure being buried near the Central Expressway construction site. Over the past season, several individuals engaged in illegal digging in the area in search of this alleged treasure.
The three-day excavation effort yielded no treasure or items of archaeological value. Despite repeated arrests of individuals involved in these illegal activities, further treasure huntings continued, prompting concerns from authorities about the potential risks posed to the ongoing Central Expressway project.
Following a report from the Veyangoda Police, the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court instructed the STF to investigate whether any treasure exists in the area.
