Mahanayake of the Asgiri chapter Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha thera has said that the acts committed by certain individuals have jeopardized the international recognition for Sri Lankan Ambassadors.
In a meeting with a UNP delegation led by UNP Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake recently, Buddharakkitha thera has said that this sort of ‘childish’ behaviour is a disrespect to the country and should be avoided at all costs.
The Asgiriya Mahanayake Thera also pointed out that no matter what happens in Sri Lanka, those who are responsible should act in a responsible manner, in a way that protects Sri Lanka’s dignity in the eyes of the international community.
.The Asgiriya Mahanayake Thera made this statement in the wake of the incident where the Sri Lankan Ambassador for the United Kingdom Dr. Chris Nonis was allegedly assaulted by a politician at a private party in New York. The incident came from severe criticism from both local and international communities.
Meanwhile, the Mahanayake also highlighted that the executive presidency should also be revised and all the negative aspects of it should be corrected. “With the current system certain individuals are bending the rules for their own benefits”, Buddharakkitha thera said.
The Mahanayake thera remarked that the country is still unable to get ‘untangled from the web which was woven by former President of Sri Lanka J R Jayawardena, through his 1978 constitution.
“The system of Preferential Votes should be abolished with immediate effect and the old electorate system should be implemented with immediate effect”, Mahanayake thera said.
