Tamil Nadu political parties that back the LTTE are becoming vociferous in their demands from the Indian government to lift the ban on the terrorist outfit, after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) asked the Council of European Union to quash restrictive measures imposed on it in 2006.
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss said India should take its cue from the ECJ’s directive, Indian media reported.
He said since European Union countries would lift the ban, the prospects were high for the LTTE to get a similar relief in the U.S. and Canada. “The ECJ’s decision will boost the efforts of Sri Lankan Tamils to form a nation of their own” he has said.
Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has claimed the order exposed the canards spread by the Indian and Sri Lankan governments against the LTTE. “India should lift the ban and acknowledge that the LTTE is the representative of a nationality seeking to liberate itself from oppression,” he has told media.
MDMK leader Vaiko was perhaps the first Tamil Nadu leader to urge the central government to lift the ban on the LTTE after the decision by EU. Vaiko has been a staunch supporter of the LTTE and is an ally of the BJP government in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam (Tamils National Movement) leader Nedumaran has also demanded the ban on the LTTE be lifted.
