The United National Party said today that it would lodge a complaint with the elections commissioner for using state resources for propaganda campaigns targeting the presidential election.
The matter will be taken up during the meeting between Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and the key opposition parties which is scheduled to take place today at the Elections Department.
A UNP MP delegation led by parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake who were on fact finding mission to the Ports Authority Training School in Slave Island revealed footage of government property being used for election propaganda purposes.
The United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will meet Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya today in order to object President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s third term presidency.
The two parties are to request Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to take necessary action to prevent President Mahinda Rajapaksa competing for a third time and that the two parties will bring forth legal evidence to prove the illegality of a third term presidency under the present constitution.
They also said that the two parties will urge the Elections Commissioner to hold future elections in a lawful, peaceful manner and especially within the constitutional boundaries.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has told media that during the meeting they intend to file a complaint with the Elections Commissioner requesting him to ensure rule of law during election times.
