The Central Committee of the Jathika Hela Urumaya is to meet on Friday (14) to make a final decision on its support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and to the UPFA government.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a spokesman of the JHU said, during the Working Committee meeting, the party would make a detailed analysis on the manner in which the government responded to the proposals presented by the JHU.
The Central Committee will meet two days after the protest rally organized by the Pivithuru Hetak organization, under the Leadership of JHU Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana Thera. Key members of the government have already started to criticize Rathana Thera’s role as a Parliamentarian of the ruling party, saying the prominent Buddhist monk has “crossed his boundaries”.
There are some speculations that the JHU Parliamentarians – Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and Athuraliye Rathana Thera- will sit in the opposition from November 15. It was also rumoured that Minister Ranawaka was making preparations to vacate his official residence as the Minister of Technology and Research.
However, the JHU spokesman added that no final decision has so far been made on the matter.
All the attempts made by various parties to build up an understanding between the government and the JHU have ended up being futile. The UPFA government did not agree to implement the proposals presented by the JHU calling for a comprehensive constitutional amendment before the next presidential election.
Meanwhile, the ‘Pivithuru Hetak’ organization charged this morning that Athuraliye Rathana’s Thera’s Facebook profile has been hacked. A spokesman for the organization dubbed it as an interesting development as the profile was hacked at a time when the relationship between Rathana Thera and the government is strained.
