'Police Acted Like Mere Onlookers When Shots Fired At Opposition’s Stage'

Police Department is accused of not acting to prevent the shooting in Kolonnawa last night despite several officers being on duty.

A Shooting incident was reported last night at the venue of the opposition rally to be held in Kolonnawa today. An armed group opened fire at the stage of the common opposition's rally in a bid to sabotage the event. The opposition rally was to be addressed by Common Candidate of the opposition Maithripala Sirisena.

However, no one sustained injuries due to the incident.

This shooting incident occurred against a backdrop where the opposition activists alleged that there was “election terror” in the Kolonnawa area to suppress the activities of the opposition.

Speaking to media, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana confirmed that initial investigations had revealed that the Police officers who were on duty had failed to take necessary steps to prevent the incident.

He also added that an investigation was underway into the incident.

Meanwhile, according to the police, a total of 75 complaints relating to election violence and violating of election laws, have been lodged ahead of the presidential polls .

The Police Media Spokesperson’s office said that a total of 28 persons have been arrested in connection to these incidents.
