Pro-Govt Protest Turns Into Clash In Front Of Sirikotha

December 24, 2014

A tense situation has occurred in front of 'Sirikotha', the UNP headquarters, as a pro-government protest turned into a clash.

The protest, according to reports, was organized by a pro-government group against the opposition. The protesters expressed their anger over the alleged "secret agreement" signed by Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena and the United National Party. The agreement was "publicized" by former UNP General Secretary and Health Minister Tissa Attanayake, two days ago.

The clash erupted when the protestors pelted stones at the UNP headquarters provoking those who were inside.

The eye-witnesses of the clash told Asian Mirror a short while ago that the road in front of Sirikotha turned into a "mini battle field". Police riot squad was also seen at the event. Several people have already sustained injuries due to the clash.

UNP Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, commenting on the incident, said, "pro-government goons attacked the UNP headquarters." Ramanayake charged that the attack was carried out by "goons" of Wimal Weerawansa.

According to Sirikotha sources, when the protesters started pelting stones at the UNP headquarters, a large number of people was inside 'Sirikotha' as a UNP affiliated trade union conference was underway.
