SL Marks Tenth Anniversary Of Tsunami

Today is the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004.

The main event will be at Hambantota and other events will also take place around the country.

The whole country will observe a 2 minutes of silence from 9.25am to 9.27am to remember those who died. The Tsunami struck Sri Lanka at 9.26am on December 26, 2004.

Also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami, it was caused by an earthquake of magnitude of over 9.0 off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. People of at least 15 countries were affeted, including in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The death toll was nearly 200,000 and included over 35,000 in Sri Lanka.

Another 5000 Sri Lankans are missing.
