Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena is to campaign in Jaffna tomorrow, along with UNP National Leader Ranil Wickrenesinghe and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.
The trio is to hold several meetings in the North tomorrow, urging the people of Jaffna to vote for the Common Opposition. This is the first time the Common Candidate of the opposition is visiting Jaffna since the announcement of the presidential election.
Interestingly, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the largest Tamil party in the country, is expected to announce its decision on the Presidential election tomorrow. It is still not clear whether the Tamil National Alliance would support any particular candidate at the upcoming presidential election.
The TNA, however, has already started a house to house campaign in the North, urging people to cast their votes at the presidential election. The Global Tamil Forum, a Tamil Diaspora organization, has also requested the Tamils in the North to exercise their franchise.
At the last presidential election, the TNA openly supported former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, Common Candidate of the opposition who also contested from the New Democratic Front. Fonseka, who lost the election by nearly 1.8 million votes, had a resounding majority from the Northern province in 2010.
