The Tamil National People's Front led by Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has decided to contest the August 17 parliamentary election alone, reports said.
The TNPF has criticized the Tamil National Alliance of working with the government, forgetting the real needs of the Tamil people.
Ponnambalam's TNPF is an alliance of several groups, but the principle member in the alliance is the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC). The ACTC was once led by Ponnambalam's grandfather G. G. Ponnambalam and thereafter by his father Kumar Ponnambalam. TNPF was once part of the TNA.
Ponnambalam came to limelight recently for organizing a remembrance day on May 18 at Mullivaikkal. However, the event was blocked by police as there was another event at the same venue.
