Sirisena, Wickremesinghe Must Ensure Nominating 'Clean' Candidates: CaFFE

Campaign for Free and Fair Election Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon said that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should accept responsibility if their parties grant nominations for individuals accused of crimes or corruption.

Issuing a statement, Tennakoon pointed out that both Sirisena and Wickremesinghe had repeatedly promised not to give such individuals nomination from their parties. However, several individuals with questionable records have already started campaigning, Tennakoon further pointed out.

If the two leaders take responsibility and ensure that clean individuals are nominated, the political process can be cleaned up to a large extent, Tennakoon also said.

Even if the two parties nominate questionable individuals, the people should take the responsibility of defeating them in the election, Tennakoon also stressed.
