The Supreme Court today (09) granted leave to proceed five petitions challenging police inaction during the violant incidents that occured at Aluthgama in June 2014.
The hearing of the petition was fixed for January 25, 2016.
The clash occurred following a protest organized by the Bodu Bala Sena on June 2014 where the BBS accused a Muslim group of assaulting a Buddhist monk. Addressing the gathering, BBS General Secretary Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera strongly criticized the Muslims in the area and said they were inciting violence.
The clashes in Aluthgama resulted in a massive property losses and destroyed the livelihood of thousands of residents. The violence continued for around three days and mandatory curfew was implemented by the police.
