Sports and Tourism Minister Navin Dissanayake alleged that there was a 'mafia' in Sri Lanka's sports sector during the former government's rule.

The 'mafia' was run by the three sons of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Dissanayake claimed at a meeting in Maskeliya recently.

Dissanayake, who was part of the former government until his defection to the Maithripala Sirisena camp during the recent presidential election, said that the 'mafia' was broken after the election of a new government.

He alleged that the country's development was focused on one family during the Rajapaksa government. The Rajapaksa family developed during that period, he elaborated.

Frontline Socialist Party Propaganda Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said that the preference votes obtained by candidates who are elected to the parliament will transform into money in the event of a hung parliament.

Speaking at a meeting recently, he said that both the UNP and the UPFA have realized the possibility of a hung parliament. In that event, some candidates from both parties are preparing to crossover for money, he claimed.

The higher the preference vote, higher will be the price they will demand, Jayagoda added.

Meanwhile, the JVP was preparing to prop-up a future UNP government, he also said, pointing out that the JVP has already rejected any deals with the UPFA. It has expressed the willingness to support any other government from outside, Jayagoda said.

Certain JVP national list members are already campaigning for the UNP, he added, pointing out that former Auditor General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne is campaigning for Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. Another lawyer in the JVP national list is in the campaign of UNP candidate Upul Shantha Sannasgala, he said.

Security was high in Aluthgama and Dharga Town yesterday as election rallies of Bodu Jana Peramuna leader and Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagodaatte Gnanasara were held in the two towns.

Additional police forces had been deployed the area as a precautionary measure, but no serious instances of disturbances were reported.

The BBS was largely blamed for the violence which flared up in June 2014 in the area following a rally by the organization. However, BBS and other Buddhist organizations dispute this allegation, saying that the BBS was not responsible.

Gnanasara Thera leads the Bodu Jana Peramuna in the Kalutara District where Aluthgama and Dharga Town are located.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa spoke about his alleged links with the LTTE and refuted the claims that he had paid money to the now defunct terrorist organization.

Taking part in a special press conference in Colombo, the former President asked if he would have destroyed the LTTE in three years, if he had a friendship with the organization in 2005.

He said that LTTE destroyed all leaders who wanted to get closer to the organization.

Rajapaksa added that there is no secret about those who gave weapons and money to the LTTE in the past.

There appears to be an attempt by some political parties to whip up an India-sentiment among the Tamils of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province in the run up to the August 17 parliamentary elections with the aim of ending the dominance of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which is perceived to be pro-India.

Authoritative sources told Express that this is being done by two pro-Tamil Tiger parties, the Tamil National Peoples’ Front (TNPF) led by Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, and the Crusaders For Democracy (CFD) led by Nadesapillai Vithyatharan.

The sources pointed out that these two parties had launched their election manifestos not only to enunciate their political plans but to revive memories of the “anti-Tamil” actions of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) when it was deployed in the Northern and Eastern Provinces from 1987 to 1990.

The TNPF launched its manifesto on August 2 at Valvettithurai, the hometown of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. It was on August 2, 1989, that 63 Tamil civilians were killed by the IPKF in reprisal for an ambush by the LTTE. TNPF cadres paid floral tributes at a site of the massacre and party chief Gajendrakumar made a scathing attack on the IPKF.

Similarly, the CFD released its manifesto at the site of the “fast unto death” of LTTE cadre Thileepan at Nallur in 1987. The LTTE had blamed India for not using its powers under the India-Sri Lanka Accord to force the Lankan government to accede to its demands. The LTTE used Thileepan’s death to whip up anti-Indian and anti-IPKF sentiments among the Tamils.

Sources suspect that the Mahinda Rajapaksa faction of the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA), along with a pro-LTTE section of the Tamil Diaspora, is behind the anti-Indian actions of the TNPF and CFD. The objective appears to be to weaken the TNA.

If the TNA’s representation in the post-election parliament is reduced, the rival United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) will find it difficult to form a government in case the polls throw up a hung parliament.

The pro-LTTE Diaspora, resident in the US, UK and Europe, has always been interested in weakening the TNA because it considers the latter to be  pro-Indian.

It is suspected that the Northern Province Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran is tacitly supporting the TNPF. Wigneswaran is believed to have met pro-LTTE elements during his recent visit to the US and UK.  Significantly he has said that he will be neutral in the elections, though he is a member of the TNA.

Former UPFA MP Dallas Alahapperuma stated that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's claim that the national security would be protected under a UNP government cannot be trusted simply because President Maithripala Sirisena would be the Defence Minister.

Speaking at a meeting in Matara yesterday, Alahapperuma said that Wickremesinghe once signed an agreement with the LTTE without informing the then President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who was also the Defence Minister. Therefore, his word cannot be trusted, Alahapperuma said.

Alahapperuma also claimed that in Wickremesinghe's world, the executive president is not Maithripala Sirisena but US President Barack Obama.

Campaign for Free and Fair Election stated that underworld gang members have been involved in election campaigns in Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy and Hambantota Districts.

Releasing a statement, CaFFE Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon said that in certain cases, underworld members who were associated with the former government have switched sides and are now supporting the present government.

These underworld members are engaged in illegal campaigning especially in Gampaha District, Tennakoon said.

In Kandy District, two owners of private security firms are in the election fray, Tennakoon said. They have employed army deserters and other suspicious individuals in their work, he also pointed out. Meanwhile, a rivalry between two underworld groups has created tensions in Hambantota, Tennakoon added.

He argued that tensions could flare up into a clash even if there was no direct involvement of the politicians personally. Therefore, these underworld members must be taken put of the campaigns, Tennakoon pointed out.
Tamil National Alliance former Parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiran said that TNA was confident on winning all seven seats in the Jaffna Electoral District since no other party will be able to exceed the 5 percent threshold needed to be entitled for a seat.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, he said that the TNA will win be able to win around 20 seats in total.

He also refuted reports indicating rifts in the TNA. There was natural competition between candidates, not due to any rift, but due to the inherent nature of the PR system, he elaborated.

Sumanthiran also commented on Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran's withdrawal from the campaign. Wigneswaran did so since he did not want to be appearing to take sides in the competition for preferential votes, Sumanthiran pointed out.
Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that he sacrificed the Prime Ministerial post entitled to him to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and became the ‘Sirisangabo’ of Badulla.

Speaking at a public meeting in Welimada, de Silva said that he believes that he will be given a powerful ministry to serve the people, in compensation to the sacrifices he made.

SLFP stalwarts made immense sacrifices to bring back Rajapaksa to politics, de Silva said. The UPFA will win the forthcoming election with no difficulty, he argued, claiming that the UPFA is leading by 10 percent in opinion polls.
