The Government is considering raising the minimum age for engaging in three-wheeler passenger transport to 40, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage said.
He said the proposed measure was aimed at discouraging young people from entering the three-wheeler transport sector immediately after completing their school education.
Speaking about planned systemic reforms in the education sector, Hewage said broader changes were needed to encourage school-leavers to acquire skills and contribute to productive sectors of the economy rather than immediately turning to three-wheeler driving as an occupation.
“We are actually looking at increasing the age for driving three-wheelers as an occupation to 40 in the future. You cannot simply finish school, get a three-wheeler and come onto the road. That is why we are making changes to the education system,” he said
