Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera has stated that individuals are no longer required to visit the Inland Revenue Department to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) when carrying out activities such as vehicle registration, obtaining revenue licences or opening bank accounts.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday (3), he said individuals could complete these transactions by providing their National Identity Card number, telephone number and email address.
He explained that the relevant institutions would forward the necessary details to the Inland Revenue Department, which would subsequently issue the TIN number.
The Deputy Minister further clarified that such transactions could be completed even without having a TIN number at the time of application.
He made these remarks during the adjournment debate on the Middle East crisis held in Parliament.
Jayaweera also noted that applications for TIN certificates could be submitted through an online system.
