The Deputy Chairman of the Patha Hewaheta Pradeshiya Sabha, Piyal Jayasinghe, has launched a hunger strike in protest against what he alleges is the unlawful conduct and administration of the council’s current chairman.

The hunger strike commenced during the local authority’s monthly council meeting.

The Patha Hewaheta Pradeshiya Sabha is currently controlled by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), while the deputy chairmanship is held by the Sarvajana Balaya party.

Speaking during the protest, Jayasinghe alleged that the chairman was acting arbitrarily and making decisions without proper consultation. He further claimed that matters discussed at council meetings were being altered and that official council records were being amended to suit the chairman’s preferences.

Jayasinghe said he would continue his protest against what he described as unlawful actions within the council.

Responding to the allegations, Patha Hewaheta Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman K.S.B. Rajanayake said he had merely informed the council of a proposed amendment to correct an error in the council records. He rejected the allegations levelled against him and denied any wrongdoing.
