Police Warn Public Over Fake GovPay Websites and SMS Scams

Sri Lanka Police have warned the public of a series of financial scams involving fake websites and fraudulent text messages designed to mimic the Government’s official GovPay digital payment platform.

Police said they have recently received complaints about fraudulent SMS messages sent in the name of the Sri Lanka Police, claiming recipients had committed speeding or other traffic offences and directing them to pay fines through fake payment links.

Police emphasised that traffic fines are issued only at the location where the offence is detected or through the established legal process where necessary.

They further clarified that even when traffic offences are detected using surveillance cameras, the Police do not send text messages requesting bank account details or directing motorists to make payments through unofficial websites or web links.

The public has been urged not to make payments through suspicious websites or links and to report any such scams immediately to the nearest police station.
