The National Police Commission has appointed Shani Abeysekara as the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Meanwhile, SSP Roshan Amarasinghe has been appointed Director of the CID on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, considering service requirements, the Police Media Division said.
Abeysekara was officially promoted from Senior Superintendent of Police to the rank of DIG on August 7, following an order issued by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in May. His promotion took retrospective effect from August 25, 2020.
The tribunal ordered the National Police Commission to grant the promotion after considering an appeal filed by Abeysekara several years ago.
Abeysekara joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Sub-Inspector on February 10, 1986, and has since served in several ranks, including Inspector, Chief Inspector, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Superintendent of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police.
