Sri Lanka’s Eco-Souvenirs Flagged as Biosecurity Hazard in Australia

An ‘unusual’ souvenir seized by Australian biosecurity officers at an airport has highlighted strict international quarantine rules for travellers returning from overseas.

A traveller arriving in Australia from Sri Lanka declared fridge magnets made from processed elephant dung. While sold as unique eco-friendly keepsakes, the items were deemed a biosecurity risk by Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry authorities and were voluntarily surrendered for disposal.

Australian Bio Security issued a public warning following the detection, noting that untreated animal waste products can harbour harmful bacteria, insect larvae, parasites, or invasive weed seeds. These biosecurity hazards pose direct threats to Australian livestock, native flora, and agricultural industries.

The authority emphasized that items sold commercially as souvenirs in foreign countries do not automatically meet the strict import or health requirements of other nations. Travellers are advised to always check biosecurity regulations before purchasing organic or animal-derived products abroad.
