Summoning of Shiranthi Rajapaksa to FCID a Political Vendetta, SLPP Says

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today alleged that the decision to summon Shiranthi Rajapaksa to the Police Financial Crimes Division (FCID) to record a statement over the accounts of the Siriliya Saviya organisation amounts to political persecution.

In a special media release issued today (3), the party said investigations into Siriliya Saviya — an organisation registered in 2006 — had first commenced in 2015, resulting in the suspension of its activities at the time.

The SLPP stressed that the renewed move to summon Shiranthi Rajapaksa after an 11-year lapse points to a clear political motive, describing it as an act of intimidation rather than a genuine investigative requirement.

According to the statement, all relevant account reports, books, and documents linked to the investigation were already taken into the custody of the FCID during the 2015 inquiry. In that context, the party said the decision to once again seek explanations from her was “absurd” and reflected a hostile attempt to target political opponents.

The SLPP further noted that Siriliya Saviya was established with the objective of alleviating poverty and providing relief to vulnerable communities, and expressed regret that the social welfare initiatives carried out through the organisation had been disrupted as a result of what it described as politically driven actions.

The party maintained that the ultimate victims of these developments were the general public who benefited from the organisation’s social service programmes.
