Sri Lanka’s only female Olympic medalist, Susanthika Jayasinghe, has stated that she will have to auction her silver medal as she is without funds to look after her two children. She noted that the incumbent government had stopped paying her salary for working as an adviser to the Ministry of Sports.

Responding to this Dayasiri Jayasekara, Minister of Sports stated that the charges are untrue.

Susanthika, known as Asian Black Mare, won the Olympic silver medal for the 200m event in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the second Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal and the first and only Asian to win an Olympic or world championship medal in a sprint event.
