The final match of the Army Inter Regiment Rugby Championship tournament 2017 was played at the Race Course Grounds on Friday (28). Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, joined others to witness the encounter as the Chief Guest for the occasion. Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Master General Ordnance and Chairman, Army Rugby Committee received the Chief Guest on arrival at the Race Course Grounds.
Before commencing the finals of the Inter Regiment Rugby tournament, the friendship match between the Pakistan Army team and the Sri Lanka Army team kicked off. The visiting Pakistan Army players won the exhibition match defeating their rivals. As part of the ongoing Army-to-Army Sports Exchange Programme between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, a 17-Member Pakistan Army Rugby Team, arrived Colombo last Monday (24).
The Pakistan Army Rugby team, led by Brigadier Ghulam Jilani, played a bilateral series with Sri Lanka Army Rugby Team during 25 - 28 July. Both sides are resolved to intensify sports and cultural cooperation for enhancing people to people contacts.
Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) and Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) teams battled it out for the Inter Regiment Rugby Championship - 2017 where SLAGSC emerged the championship for 26 to 03 points. Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake after extending his warm congratulations to the winners presented the Championship Trophy to SLAGSC players and to the winners of the friendship tournament amidst applause.
