New Running Track For Sugathadasa Stadium

September 26, 2017

The laying of a new running track at the Sugathadasa stadium is currently underway. It was inaugurated by Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara recently.  The Minister stated that the construction work has been awarded to an organization of international repute. It has been agreed to complete construction work within 3 months.

Since the running track that was laid in the 2012, became dilapidated within a short period of 3 years, the new track had to be laid. The Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority has been taken over the Ministry of Sports as Trust Fund with effects from 01-02-1995.

The 1991 and 2006 South Asian Games were held in Sugathadasa Stadium. It also hosted the majority of matches for the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. The 2010 IIFA Awards took place here. In 2012, the stadium was home to the Elite Football League of India.
