Novak Djokovic made it two wins from two at the ATP World Tour Finals, crushing Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-0 at the O2 Arena.
The top seed - seeking to win the end-of-season tournament for a third year in a row - improved his head-to-head record against the Swiss to 16-3, while also gaining a modicum of revenge for his defeat to the same opponent at this year's Australian Open.
Astonishingly Wawrinka began the battle between the two unbeaten players in Group A by breaking serve, then quickly consolidated the early success to move 2-0 ahead against the world No 1.
However, from then on he was simply blown away by Djokovic, winning just one more game and only mustering seven points in total in a ridiculously one-sided second set.
Djokovic has now dropped just five games in total in London this year, having already thrashed Marin Cilic 6-1 6-1 in his opening outing.
Serious run
Wawrinka had posted a comprehensive win of his own though, thrashing Tomas Berdych on Monday afternoon, and it seemed he might give the reigning champion a serious run for his money when he broke at the third opportunity in the first game.
A searing forehand winner helped him double his advantage, though that just seemed to anger Djokovic to fire back – and how.
The Serbian won the next five games on the spin, not even a change of racket helping Wawrinka bring about a change of fortune as he had no answer to what was coming his way.
Djokovic sealed the first set at the second attempt and then systematically destroyed his rival in the next to not only put one foot in the semi-finals but also move a step closer to ending the year at the head of the rankings. It was also his 29th successive win indoors, leaving him need to take just a set off Berdych to qualify.
"There are some tournaments around the world that I play, like this one or Beijing, that I wish all the tournaments are played in one place, the way you feel on those courts," he said afterwards.
"Obviously Stan wasn't feeling his best today, he made a lot of unforced errors, a low percentage of first serves in.
"I didn't start so great. I thought he played very well the first two games. But I wasn't frustrated. I kept calm. After that, it was a really amazing performance."
Even Wawrinka was left applauding one drop shot at the net as for just the 16th time in his career he lost a set to love. Despite the heavy defeat, he can still make it through to the final four by beating Cilic on Friday.
"I'm not worried," he said when asked about the defeat. "All the players who faced him recently have lost in two sets."
