Police Promise Strong Action Against Big-Match ‘Trucking’

February 18, 2017

Sri Lanka Police will not hesitate to use the law on students engaged in ‘trucking’ or making a nuisance of themselves during the ‘big match’ season, Police Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody warned last week.

“We entreat parents and teachers to keeper a closer eye on the students during this upcoming cricket season,” DIG Priyantha Jayakody said.

“While there is some acceptance on our part that boys will engage in vehicle parades before the ‘big match’, the Police will not hesitate to use the law against students making a nuisance of themselves,” he said.

“During the cricket season, boys jump into girls’ schools and blatantly violate road traffic rules. As the only agency charged with maintaining law and order, the Police will no longer turn a blind eye to this. We are prepared to produce the students, and all those involved, before the law,” the DIG further warned.

His warning comes in the aftermath of an incident at D. S. Senanayake College, between students of Ananda College, Nalanda College and D.S.

Students of Ananda and Nalanda College are traditional ‘big match’ rivals.

Fifteen students were arrested, several hospitalised and six vehicles damaged in the clash that turned violent.
