Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa today said he could get his US citizenship revoked in two months if a political party decided to field him as a Presidential candidate.
Speaking to media in Colombo today, Rajapaksa expressed his views on contesting the next Presidential election.
"There's no decision as such. But, if there is a decision of that sort, I can work towards getting my US citizenship revoked," he added.
The 19th Amendment to the constitution, passed by Parliament in 2015, bars dual citizens from contesting elections in Sri Lanka.
"The final decision has to come from former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He still hasn't asked me to run for presidency," the former Defence Secretary added.
However, many stalwarts of the Joint Opposition have already stated that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would be the opposition's main Presidential candidate in 2020.
