President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to dissolve Parliament despite constitutional barriers placed on him by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
As such, the Gazette pertaining to the dissolution of Parliament has been sent to the Government Printers, and will be issued soon, proclaiming that Parliament is dissolved as at midnight tonight.
Speculation is high that general elections will be called for either December 2018, or January 2019.
Be that as it may, there are strong indications that Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya will seek the Supreme Court’s opinion on the legality of the dissolution, before proceeding with an election.
