Commonwealth election observers on Wednesday said they were "cautiously optimistic" about a democratic parliamentary election in Sri Lanka next week.

The observers, who are in Sri Lanka at the invitation of Sri Lanka's department of elections, said they have found election process going peacefully.

"On behalf of my team, I can say that we are cautiously optimistic that we are on the right track for a democratic process in this election, but our appeal is for all stakeholders to remain constantly vigilant," Former President of Malta, Dr. George Abela, who is leading the Commonwealth Observer group in Sri Lanka, told journalists in capital Colombo.

The nine-member group who arrived in the island nation on Monday have already held discussions with the Sri Lankan Elections Commissioner and representatives of political parties and civil society.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have agreed to offer their support to the next government in order to achieve ‘good-governance principles’, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said on Tuesday (11).

Taking part in the ‘360’ political talk show on TV Derana, Wickremesinghe said that the JVP and the TNA will stay within the principles of their parties. However, they will support the next government when it comes to establishing democracy and good governance and introducing permanent solutions to the problem of racism, the PM added.

However, Wickremesinghe also said that the UNP will win a majority in parliament.

Meanwhile, Wickremasinghe also claimed that the LTTE asked for a bribe from him in 2005 to order the people in the north and the east to not to vote for Mahinda Rajapaksa. However he refused their request, Wickremesinghe said.

He alleged that Rajapaksa bribed LTTE twice. The LTTE became stronger by buying modern weapons and recruiting new carders using the money Rajapaksa gave, Wickremesinghe said.

Rajapaksa, however, has repeatedly denied the allegations on his links with the LTTE.

Furthermore, Wickremesinghe added that contrary to his claims, Rajapaksa promised the Indian Prime Minister to devolve power according to the 13th Amendment.

Wickremesinghe added that he will never agree to a solution which could do any harm to the sovereignty of the country.

A systematic campaign is underway to sabotage the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna election campaign, the JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath alleged today.

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Herath said that false rumors have been spread about the party.

Furthermore, falsified documents are also being circulated, he said. These documents include false versions of the JVP election manifesto, Herath pointed out.

The JVP recently filed a complaint on a Facebook page spreading false information while pretending to be an official page of the party.

Anuradhapura District UPFA candidate Duminda Dissanayake said that disciplinary action should be taken against those who are spreading false rumors on the party from within.

Speaking at a recent meeting in Anuradhapura, he said that there were some members of the UPFA who make false allegations about him. Rumors were being circulated that he will join the UNP after the election, he pointed out.

Dissanayake said that this claim has the implication that the UPFA will lose the election. He pointed out that there will be no need to join the UNP if the UPFA can win 113 seats. The UPFA should aim to win the election, rather than paying attention to false rumors, he also said.

Dissanayake further stated that these rumors have a negative impact on the party. Therefore, those who spread such rumors should be penalized for the sake of the party, he insisted.
Minister Rishad Bathiudeen is blatantly violating election laws in the Mannar District by distributing money and goods in the guise of religious donations, Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon said.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, he accused Bathiudeen of donating money to religious leaders in the area and distributing goods to the people.

He also said that Bathiudeen has taken precautions to disguise his donations at religious events to mislead the election officials.

Meanwhile, Tennakoon accused the police of not conducting investigations into complaints on Bathiudeen’s alleged election violations. The police is not taking measures to remove posters in the area, he further said. It was as if Mannar does not belong to the jurisdiction of the country, Tennakoon said, slamming the police for its inaction.

However, Bathiudeen rejected the allegations leveled at him, saying that he is making such donations in every Ramazan season. He has informed the election officials of the matter, he said.

UNP Kurunegala candidate Nalin Bandara said that the people of Kurunegala did not ask for the return of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to politics from their district.

Bandara stated this when asked about Rajapaksa's claim that he returned to politics due to overwhelming requests made by the people.

Speaking to Asian Mirror yesterday, Bandara said that Rajapaksa's candidacy was a blessing in disguise for the UNP. He claimed that even the moderate SLFP supporters are questioning the return of Rajapaksa, who is a defeated candidate. Only those who blindly follow him support Rajapaksa, Bandara insisted.

He further said that he was certain of UNP victory in the Bingiriya Electorate and the Kurunegala District.

Nalin Bandara is the UNP Chief Organizer in Bingiriya.

Although the UPFA campaign slogan speaks about starting afresh, there are no fresh faces among the main candidates of the UPFA, Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

Speaking at an election rally last evening at Maharagama, Ranawaka said that the United National Front for Good Governance has put forward some fresh faces to the election campaign.

Furthermore, those who support good governance principles have gathered around the UNFGG, he added. Ranawaka insisted that the UPFA will be soundly defeated in the August 17 election.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress-All Ceylon Makkal Congress rivalry flared up yesterday at a press conference in Colombo called by a group including North Western Provincial Council Member Rizvi Jawaharsha.

Jawaharsha, a member of the SLMC, claimed that ACMC leader Rishad Bathiudeen was responsible for erasing his name from the nominations list to contest the forthcoming general election under the UNP ticket.

He also claimed to have information regarding fraudulent land deals of Bathiudeen.

While the press conference was underway, a group led by Western Provincial Council Member A.J.M. Faiz started arguing with Jawaharsha and his group. Faiz is a member of the ACMC.

The press conference got underway after Faiz and his group left.

UPFA Colombo District candidate Udaya Gammanpila on today challenged Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka for a debate on alleged deals between former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the LTTE in 2005.

Gammanpila made this challenge at a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headquarters in Colombo.

Patali Champika Ranawaka openly challenged Mahinda Rajapaksa for a debate on the alleged deals, at a press conference earlier in the day.

Ranawaka said that he has evidence to prove the alleged deal between Rajapaksa and the LTTE.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is shedding crocodile tears on the death of former Sri Lankan ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen, Minister Arjuna Ranatunga stated.

Speaking at a meeting in Dekatana yesterday, Ranatunga said that it was ironical to see the former president promising to launch an investigation to Thajudeen’s death.

Those who were against the Rajapaksa government had always insisted that it was not an accident but murder. Even though the death occurred in 2012, the Rajapaksa government did not launch any investigation on the matter, Ranatunga said.

The body of Wasim Thajudeen was exhumed yesterday for forensic analysis following a request by the CID.
