Four spill gates have automatically opened today at Upper Kotmale Dam due to rising waters.

Engineers at the dam said that the other gates could also open automatically if the water levels continued to rise.

The Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Centre warned people to be vigilant of the rising water levels downstream.

Meanwhile, motorists are being warned by the police of heavy mist along the roads in the upcountry. Visibility has been reduced drastically due to the situation. Motorists are advised to use headlights when driving on the roads.
