High Court Permits Basil Rajapaksa To Travel Abroad

December 07, 2016

Colombo High Court judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena allowed former minister Basil Rajapaksa to travel to the United States for three months for medical purposes.

He had made the request earlier concerning a case in the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court where he has been given a travel ban.

The AG objected to the request saying that it was a long period and that there was no guarantee than he would return since he was a US citizen.

However, the judge said that he had once returned in April 2015 and there was no reason to suspect that he will not return.

Rajapaksa was allowed to travel to the US on a surety of Rs 2.5 million.
