Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and take up the matter with Sri-Lankan authorities on apprehension of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy.

In a request written to the PM, Panneerselvam demanded the immediate release of 22 fishermen and 109 boats from Sri Lankan custody, News X said.

The Sri Lanka Navy on Monday had arrested seven fishermen for allegedly poaching illegally in the northern seas of the island country. The fishermen were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Jaffna.

Earlier this month, eight fishermen from Tamil Nadu were said to be injured after Sri Lankan Navy allegedly attacked them while fishing off Neduntheevu.
