779 Prisoners Pardoned Ahead of Sinhala & Tamil New Year Celebrations

Today marks a significant day for 779 inmates serving sentences in Sri Lanka as they are set to be pardoned in light of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations. Among them, 768 male prisoners and 11 female prisoners have been deemed eligible for special state amnesty and are scheduled for release.

The Prisons Department has announced that eligible prisoners from various correctional facilities across the country will benefit from this special amnesty program. Additionally, in honor of the festive occasion, relatives of the inmates will be permitted to visit them today.

As part of the visitation protocol, relatives are allowed to provide food, sweets, and sanitary items to the prisoners, adhering to existing rules and proper hygienic protocols outlined by the department.

This gesture aims to foster a sense of joy and familial connection during the auspicious Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities while offering deserving inmates an opportunity for a fresh start.
