A total of 806 people from 238 families in the Badulla District have been evacuated from their homes owing to the heightened risk of landslides, District Secretary Prabath Abeywardhana said.

He noted that the evacuations were carried out on the instructions of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), following continuous rainfall associated with the activation of the North-East monsoon.

According to the District Secretary, the evacuation process was completed on 10 December, with residents moved to designated safe centres.

“Fourteen out of the fifteen Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the district have been affected. Even the Ridimaliyadda Division, which had not previously reported impacts, has now come under risk,” he said.

The breakdown of evacuations is as follows:
– 129 people from 50 families in Kalukale
– 157 people from 60 families in Soranathota
– 127 people from 40 families in Uva Paranagama
– 139 people from 50 families in Ridimaliyadda
– 158 people from 35 families in Meegahakiwula
– 87 people from 18 families in Hali-Ela
– 148 people from 34 families in Ella

In total, 806 individuals from 238 families have been relocated to safety due to the prevailing landslide risk.
