An Iranian passenger vessel has reportedly become stranded in sea areas off Panadura, with a group of children said to be among those on board, multiple sources said.

Sources said the vessel will not be brought to a Sri Lankan port. However, following requests from passengers, Sri Lanka has agreed to provide essential assistance, particularly drinking water, considering the difficult conditions faced by those on board, especially children.

Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in Parliament, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the vessel is not located within Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.

“The vessel in question is not within our national waters. It is currently located in the Exclusive Economic Zone close to the national waters. I can only say that we are intervening to the maximum possible extent regarding the lives involved. Once these activities are concluded, a detailed report will be presented to Parliament,” he said.

However, the minister did not disclose the exact location of the vessel.
