The Free Media Movement (FMM) has condemned a move by Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to seek information from social media platform X about journalist Sulochana Ramaiya Mohan after she shared one of her articles on the country’s energy crisis.
Ramaiya Mohan, the Deputy Editor at Ceylon Today newspaper, was notified by X that the CID had claimed her article, published in Ceylon Today under the headline “Govt seeks time to address power ministry issues,” contained content that violated Sri Lankan law.
The FMM said its review found no illegal elements in either the newspaper article or the post, and described the inquiry as undue interference with freedom of expression.
It warned that the journalist could face risks for reporting on alleged corruption linked to the energy crisis, and pledged to raise the matter with local and international stakeholders.
