The United National Party (UNP) has declined an invitation from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to join its May Day celebrations this year, citing religious observances.
In a letter issued in response to the invitation, UNP General Secretary Thalatha Atukorale said the party had previously decided not to engage in political activities on 1 May, as it falls on a Vesak Poya Day.
She noted that the UNP had resolved to dedicate the day to religious observances, adding that engaging in political activities on a Poya Day would be inappropriate.
Atukorale also recalled that former Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa had emphasised during his tenure that political activities should not be conducted on Poya Days.
Accordingly, she stated that the UNP would not be able to participate in May Day rallies organised by the SJB or any other party.
However, she added that there is a broader expectation among many for the UNP and SJB to work together, and expressed the party’s willingness to collaborate in future political activities.
