Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has reportedly fallen victim to a burglary at his residence in Senapura, Debarawewa, in the Tissamaharama area, according to a report published by Dinamina citing the Tissamaharama Police.

The suspect is alleged to have stolen 15 sacks of paddy valued at approximately Rs. 55,000, along with an imported electric fan from the property.

According to the report, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had travelled to Colombo on the morning of May 12 to provide a statement to the Bribery Commission. At the same time, Chamal Rajapaksa had also reportedly left for Colombo with several others.

Police believe the burglary may have taken place during the period when the house was left unattended.

Investigators further stated that a state bank passbook was discovered on the ground near an opened window of the residence. The passbook was later identified as belonging to a 38-year-old resident of the Tissamaharama area.

Based on this discovery, the complainant has reportedly informed police that he suspects the owner of the bank passbook may be connected to the theft, the newspaper further reported.
