A total of 11 people were confirmed dead following a devastating fire that broke out at an elders’ home in Anguruwatota, Horana, on Wednesday (3), while three others remained unaccounted for, according to Police.

Seven residents who sustained injuries in the incident were admitted to the Horana District Hospital for treatment.

The fire swept through the elders’ home, triggering a major rescue operation involving Police officers, firefighters, emergency responders, and local residents.

Authorities said 72 residents were at the facility when the blaze erupted. Rescue teams managed to evacuate 44 occupants without injury.

The fire, which spread rapidly through sections of the home, was eventually brought under control after an extensive firefighting effort.

Police said 11 residents were initially reported missing in the aftermath of the incident. Subsequent search operations within the premises led to the discovery of several bodies, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further as investigations continue.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Investigators are examining the scene to determine how the blaze started and whether any safety lapses may have contributed to the tragedy.

A magistrate’s inquiry was scheduled to be conducted this morning, while a report from the Judicial Medical Officer is expected to provide further details regarding the victims.

Meanwhile, authorities have arranged temporary accommodation for 51 displaced residents at Batagoda Primary School as relief efforts continue.

Horana Police are conducting further investigations.
