The main suspect in the Teldeniya murder investigation, launched after the body of a woman was found inside a parked vehicle, has been arrested in Jaffna along with his wife, police said.

According to the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Nuwara Eliya Division, officers attached to the Jaffna Crime Investigation Unit apprehended the pair after receiving information that they were travelling by bus from Wellawatte to Jaffna on Tuesday (24).

The suspects are expected to be handed over to the Nuwara Eliya Police for further investigations.

The investigation began after Teldeniya Police received an anonymous telephone call claiming that a woman’s body was inside a parked vehicle. Police officers who responded to the scene found the vehicle locked and, after forcing it open, discovered the body inside.

The victim was identified as a 33-year-old physiotherapist attached to Ampara Hospital and a resident of Weligama.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the woman’s boyfriend may have transported her body in the vehicle before abandoning it and fleeing the area.

Investigators later found that the victim had stayed at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya from June 3 to June 16. CCTV footage reportedly showed her boyfriend carrying her while she was unconscious during that period.

Police also said the initial call alerting authorities to the body is believed to have been made by the boyfriend, who subsequently went into hiding before being arrested. Investigations are continuing.
