Sri Lanka has identified 14 districts as being at high risk of dengue as infections continue to rise across the country, the National Dengue Control Unit said on Wednesday.

Acting Director Dr. Kapila Kannangara said the total number of dengue cases reported so far this year had reached 48,287, with around 750 new infections recorded during the 24-hour period between June 22 and June 23.

He described the continued spread of dengue mosquitoes through man-made breeding sites as a “tragedy” and urged the public to work together to eliminate potential breeding grounds by keeping their surroundings clean.

Authorities have also intensified dengue eradication programmes as the disease continues to spread rapidly during the southwest monsoon season
