The Deputy Mayor of the Hambantota Municipal Council was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
According to police, two motorcycle patrol officers stopped a pickup truck for inspection near the Rotawela Junction in Ambalantota. During the check, they suspected that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
The driver was taken to the police station, where further tests confirmed that he had been driving while intoxicated.
Police later identified the suspect as the Deputy Mayor of the Hambantota Municipal Council. He is also a councillor representing the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya, which controls the Hambantota Municipal Council.
The suspect was later released on police bail and is scheduled to appear before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court on July 9.
