The leader of the Janasetha Peramuna, Ven. Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera, claimed that the people who placed their trust in the National People’s Power (NPP) and voted the current Government into office have now been left “helpless.”
Addressing a media briefing, the Thera alleged that the public, particularly the farming community, was facing severe difficulties under the present administration.
He said many members of the public had begun approaching him to express their frustrations and were now urging him to take political leadership in the future.
According to the Thera, some people had previously rejected his appeals and insisted they would only support the NPP. However, he claimed that those same individuals were now disappointed with the Government’s performance.
“They told us, ‘We are with Anura and the Compass. We will not go beyond the Compass and we will not vote for you.’ But I warned them that once they received a mandate, they would betray the people. Today, farmers are asking me, ‘Hamuduruwane, who do we turn to now? There is no one to speak to.’ They are now telling me to take power in the future and protect them,” he said.
Ven. Seelarathana Thera maintained that growing public dissatisfaction had prompted people to seek an alternative political leadership.
